After London, Paris and Rome, Berlin is the most popular tourist destination in Europe. Over 4 Million visitors spent at least one night in Berlin in 1999. The majority of these visitors are Germans, but the second largest group is American, followed by Britons, Danes and Swedes, all of whom are likely to use English as their language of choice while in Berlin.
International hotel chains are of course scattered throughout the city in the old western sector around Zoologischer Garten, and new ones are sprouting up in the East in Mitte and in Potsdamer Platz to cater for the growing demand for beds. Although the number of hotel beds offered in Berlin rose by over 6% in 1999, the number of nights spent by tourists in Berlin rose by over 11% during the same period.
Germans themselves are keen travellers - Germany´s outbound travel market had a turnover in 1998 of USD 45,556 million; 28% was business travel and 72% was leisure travel. The outbound travel market shows distinct trends towards special interest and soft adventure holidays, dual-purpose vacations, a lean towards eco-tourism, personal safety, greater individuality and flexible packages.
