If you are looking for something really different, the 27 rooms in this converted apartment are pretty wild. Artist and musician Lars Stroschen has created each chamber as a sleeping experience from the Crystal Maze-type 'Symbol room' to the Toontown fantasy of the 'Burgzimmer'. Guests can prepare their own meals in the equally wacky kitchens or, if booked in advance, there is an 'aphrodisiac menu'(!) dinner available which will be specially cooked for you. Ideal for two couples travelling together as each pair of rooms shares a bathroom/WC and kitchen which is pretty much self-contained. There is no TV or phone in the rooms to disturb your enjoyment and the owner requires cash payment in advance as well as EUR 50 key deposit. Far out!

Luisenstrasse 19, 10117 Berlin - Mitte | Tel: 284 48-0, Fax: 280 69 42 | U6 Oranienburger Tor | Rooms: starting at EUR 50; small breakfast included
Just across the Spree from the historic Reichstag, now seat of the German Parliament (redesigned by Norman Foster). This unique gem, dating back to 1825, was re-opened in 1999 after a complete renovation. Each room or suit is the creation of an individually commissioned artist, with basic amenities on the top floor; a bed, telephone and shared bathroom facilities as well as communal kitchen/breakfast room; grand rooms and suites on the bel etage. Luxury suites are also available. Definitely for the more adventurous and artistically inclined: do not expect the more mundane mini-bars or satellite-TVs. The only drawback can be the proximity to the S-Bahn for some rooms. Features: room services, telephone, and three culinary venues.

Hotel Märkischer Hof
Linienstraße 133, 10115 Berlin - Mitte | Tel: 282 71 55, Fax: 282 43 31 | U6 Oranienburger Tor. | Price: singles starting at EUR 50; doubles at EUR 70; triple EUR 110. Breakfast included. | Cards: EC, V.
The Märkischer Hof feels more like a pension than a hotel, but the staff are friendly and the location is great - the Berliner Ensemble, Tacheles and the New Synagogue are all within walking distance, not to mention the jumping restaurant and bar scene in Mitte. The rooms here are all bright and spacious, regardless of price and although the place has been around for 100 years, the bathrooms are satisfyingly modern. There is a T.V. room for guests´ use, or for more idiosyncratic entertainment, have a chat to Sylvia herself about her experiences in the German hotel trade.
