Once you've got the lease in hand, but before you sign it, it is advisable to join one of the many renters organizations in town. The cost is somewhere between 60 and 150DM per year, depending on which organization you choose. There are lists of them in the phonebook, but two of the larger are:

This organisation have offices all over Berlin. The address given is the head office. They have English speaking lawyers who will go over all your questions, and your lease. They provide free legal advice and will represent you in any legal battles. You will also find them invaluable in getting your much coveted deposit back, should you find your landlord has grown attached to it.

Where to get financial aid
Low income earners are eligible for rent subsidies (Wohngeld). Consult your district welfare office (Sozialamt) for more details.
