Walking into Café Einstein on Kurfürstenstr. is like walking into Vienna. The mirrored walls, high ceilings, and red velvet banquettes all echo the grand old style of a traditional Viennese coffee house. So do the small but perfectly executed selection of cakes and the rich, mellow coffee. In summer, take a seat in the cool, quiet garden. They also have a lunch and diner menu in "International, Austrian Style" - try such classics as Wiener Schnitzel or Austrian Pancakes (Kaiser Schmarren). The second, more crowded, less opulent Mitte location also offers outdoor seating, if you fancy a table in the middle of busy Unter den Linden.

Editors Choice: one of the best original French standing-room bistros in Berlin, serving scrumptious panini, pasteries, coffee and the obligatory Orangina, everything baked fresh that day by a team of young, dynamic French : just 5 min. walk north from Friedrichstrasse Station, and literally 1 min. from the famous Bertolt Brecht House! .... quick and scrumptious baguette sandwiches or the house specialty, panini: a half-baked baguette sandwich, pressed flat in a griller until fully cooked. Fill either with all the best ingredients of your choice: country paté and cornichons, steak, chicken, smoked salmon, brie, feta, chaume, camembert, roquefort, mozzarella, troi fromages, salami (French or Spanish), fresh lettuce, tomatoes. Take it to go or eat it there, but get there before the rush at 13:00 or thereafter at 14:30. Or check-out their Checkpoint Charlie location here.

Cafe Bravo
Auguststraße 69, 10117 Berlin - Mitte | Tel: 2838744 40, Fax: 28 38 74 42 | U6 Oranienburger Tor | In the courtyard of the Kunst-werke gallery
map:
It is the design of this cafe that lures the guests. American designer, Dan Graham, designed not only the building - a voyeuristic arragement of glass and mirrors - but also the interior. The minimalist interior is brightened up by copies of the teen magazine "Bravo", the namesake of the cafe. The cafe shares a hidden courtyard with the gallery Kunst-Werke and the private offices and "lounge" cinema of artist Christoph Schlingegnsief, so whilst enjoying a generous piece of New York cheesecake and Barcomi's roasted coffee you can watch the art world go by. New this summer is the "Cocktail lounge deluxe" on a Friday night with cocktails at 10-12DM.

Displaced Americans yearning for a taste of home will find comfort in the dessert selection at both the ultra-trendy (Sophienstr.) and cramped but casual (Bergmannstr.) versions of this cafe. Treat yourself to some amazing apple pie, excellent American style cheesecake, or the best brownies in Berlin. Also known for their wide selection of freshly ground coffee. The cakes and the cookies all look delicious, but looks can be deceiving.
