You always hear Germans saying that Berlin is unlike anywhere in Germany. That's as true about the food scene here as it is about anything. There is still ample occasion to sample the local fare, an elevated hearty farmer's spread, and it can be delicious, if somewhat decadent in its celebration of meat and fat.

I guess what those Germans mean when they say that Berlin is different is that it has the biggest and most varied tapestry of minorities of any city in Germany, thus the close-to-world-class range of dining possibilites. Unfortunately the dazzlements of multi-kulti are still somewhat dimmed by a tendency to culinary mediocrity. Germans are known as lovers of insurance and haters of risk. You can usually count on a large and filling portion of whatever you order wherever you are but it is presumptuous to expect it to have any perceptable flavour.

This section of our site, however, strives to distinguish those establishments who dare to stick their necks out and offer something that might cause one to pause and savour. Shock, surprise, here's a survival guide to happy dining in Berlin for every price range.
