With an international bank card such as Mastercard, Cirrus, EC, Visa it is possible to withdraw Deutschemarks from your home account at all ATMs (cash machines).
When you withdraw cash from your German account, make sure it is from a machine which belongs to your banking group (for example, Deutsche Bank customers can also use Dresdner Bank and Commerzbank machines for free)- using other banks' machines will incur a charge of DM4.
You can check this on each ATM - there is a list of banks whose customers have free usage, and which ones are charged either € 4 or even € 10 for certain services.
