One result of the government move during the summer 1999 is the influx of a considerable number of international students into Berlin's state schools. While the Kennedy-School and other state-supported schools don´t charge tuition, regular international schools depend on high tuition fees which not all of the embassies are able to pay. Also, many international families plan to stay in Berlin long-term, and therefore prefer an education within the host nation´s education system.
There have been numerous efforts by the Berlin city government to establish state schools with more than just a national program and to support the establishment of various other schools. So, about 10 years after the fall of the wall, there is a fair selection of schools available.
Europa Schulen
Over the past decade Berlin has established numerous opportunities to offer students a bilingual education. The city government has established more than a dozen elementary schools with a bilingual program - always German in connection with either English, French, Russian, Italian, Turkish, Greek, Portuguese and Polish. The idea is based on Berlin´s multilingual population and focusses on languages which are represented in Berlin´s population on a larger scale. The concept of these schools is not comparable to international schools. Europa Schools use German curricula and most teachers are German citizens. These schools offer education primarily for families with dual citizenship or dual language backgrounds.
