Once the flagship opera house of the formerly divided city's western sector, this venue has come under attack lately for what some circles perceive as the overstayed welcome of Götz Friedrich's intendantship. Political squabbling aside, this is a fine all-round opera house where generally excellent casts perform both bread-and-butter works as well as contemporary operas.

Deutsche Staatsoper

Beware of the appallingly awful new Wagner productions by Harry Kupfer. But let's not be overly negative; this is actually, all things considered, probably Berlin's best (and certainly its most glamorous) opera house. It attracts better singers than the city's other two houses, and some recent new productions have been superlative, viz. Peter Greenaway and Saskia Boddeke's utterly outstanding production of Milhaud's "Christophe Colomb."

Komische Oper

Behrenstrase 55-57, 10117 Berlin - Mitte | Tel: 47 99 74 00, Fax: no fax | U6 Französische Str. | Times: 11am-7pm Mon-Sat; 1pm-4:30pm Sun, hols. | Cards: EC, MC, V. | Program

The Komische Oper is sort of Berlin's "budget opera house". By employing lesser-known opera singers (often Eastern Europeans), smaller production costs and a longer season than Berlin's other two opera houses, the Komische Oper manages to keep seat prices down (all unsold seats are offered at 50% off at the box office from noon on the same day as the performance). Sadly, low budget equals low quality, and it's been a long time since a truly noteworthy production was staged at this house.
